Times Online Reviews a New Encyclopedia on British Crime Writing

British Crime Writing: An Encyclopedia [Two Volumes] by Barry Forshaw

The Times Online published a review a day or so ago of a new reference work, British Crime Writing: An Encyclopedia edited by Barry Forshaw. We rarely review reference material, so we appreciate reviewer Marcel Berlins' take on this new book.

Somewhat to his surprise, he finds "no inexplicable gaps nor entries criminally excluded." He notes that most of the 800-plus pages over two volumes deal with individual authors, but other entries analyze the history and development of the genre, and is particularly impressive in its wide range of associated issues.

Berlins praises the editor, Barry Forshaw, for his depth of knowledge on the subject and also the excellence and expertise of the contributors he has chosen, among which are academics and commentators who are themselves successful crime writers.

Already available in the UK, British Crime Writing: An Encyclopedia is scheduled for release here in the US in late February and may be pre-ordered from Amazon.com.

Mystery Book Review: Murder in Los Lobos by Sue McGinty

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of Murder in Los Lobos by Sue McGinty. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

Review: Sue McGinty introduces Bella Kowalski, an obituary writer (but hoping to become a reporter) for a central California newspaper in Murder in Los Lobos.

Bella is driving along a coastal highway when another vehicle, a much larger Hummer, tries to force her off the road. Initially she thinks it's because of her very public stance against a new wastewater treatment plant planned for a pristine piece of property in her community. Later when a co-owner of the property is found dead, her car, which was almost identical to Bella's, pushed over the side of a cliff, she isn't so sure. While researching the woman's background for her obituary, Bella discovers she kept a journal. Thinking the journal may yield clues to who killed her, Bella goes undercover to retrieve the information, too late realizing that she may also be risking her life.

Though Murder in Los Lobos is a promising start to this planned series of (at least) three mysteries, it ultimately suffers from a weak, improbable plot and erratic pacing. On the plus side, the author takes care to introduce interesting characters that are well drawn if a little overly complex. It probably wasn't necessary to have such intricate backstories for all the main characters revealed in this first book but it works to a degree because they're extended fairly evenly over much of the story. In contrast, the details of the murder investigation and its resolution are rapidly compressed into much tighter spaces, not all of it in a linear, logical manner. And it's always unfortunate when the central character does little to unmask the killer or discover the reasoning behind the murder, resorting to the simplistic "if I'm going to die anyway, you might as well tell me why you did it" tactic. Still, Bella is an engaging lead in a series that, with stronger plots that actually develop a credible mystery, has the potential for a long(er) run.

Bella Kowalski, former nun, now an obituary writer for the local paper and an activist for nature conservancy, knows Connie’s murder had something to do with plans to build a profitable but ill-advised wastewater treatment plant on environmentally sensitive land. And Connie is only the first victim in what becomes a thorny scandal, involving powerful politicos, corrupt local government, greed, family secrets, and skullduggery.

John Grisham Discusses His New Legal Thriller, The Associate

's latest legal thriller, The Associate, was published this week with the author giving his first ever blog-based interviews to two organizations. (Alas, Mystery Books News was not one of them.)

On Above the Law, he notes that legal blogs where associates anonymously post their stories were a source of research for The Associate, his 22nd novel and a sequel of sorts to The Firm.

And on the Law Blog of the Wall Street Journal, Grisham discusses the business of law, the inspiration for his books, and controversial figures in the news today.

The Associate is Kyle McAvoy, a young man who grew up in his father’s small-town law office in York, Pennsylvania. He excelled in college, was elected editor-in-chief of The Yale Law Journal, and his future has limitless potential.

But Kyle has a secret, a dark one, an episode from college that he has tried to forget. The secret, though, falls into the hands of the wrong people, and Kyle is forced to take a job he doesn’t want—even though it’s a job most law students can only dream about.

Three months after leaving Yale, Kyle becomes an associate at the largest law firm in the world, where, in addition to practicing law, he is expected to lie, steal, and take part in a scheme that could send him to prison, if not get him killed.

Mystery Book Review: The Detective Wore Silk Drawers by Peter Lovesey

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of The Detective Wore Silk Drawers by Peter Lovesey. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

Review: Peter Lovesey's second novel featuring Sergeant Cribb, The Detective Wore Silk Drawers, originally published in 1971 and newly reissued by Soho Press, is again a sports-themed mystery with the Victorian London detective investigating illegal bare-knuckle boxing.

Sergeant Cribb and his assistant Constable Thackery are called to investigate a headless corpse washed up on the shore of the Thames. Because of the wounds on his hands and the shape of his knuckles, they believe he was a fighter in the underworld of bare-fisted pugilism -- a sport ruled illegal years before. In order to learn more they enlist the help of young, well-built, ex-boxer Constable Jago. Jago continues to work out in the gym at Scotland Yard. Although he has never fought bare-fisted, he’s certain he has been trained by men who have. He could tell by their hands and knuckles. He knows of these “pugs”, men trained in secret mansions or buildings. Mystery not only surrounds the owners of these fighters, but what happens to those who lose. Some believe they go into hiding to keep from being jailed. Still others believe they are killed and their bodies buried. Cribb and his team suspect one such mansion, Radstock Hall, owned by Mrs. Vilbert, is not only her home, but also a training center for pugs. Why else would she have a large gymnasium with every work-out apparatus available to build a fighter’s body? Jago goes undercover and is accepted at Radstock to prepare for a fight against “The Ebony”, already a winning fighter.

But all doesn't go as planned. Mrs. Vilbert is soon murdered, stabbed to death, her take of the money bet on the upcoming fight missing and found under Jago's pillow. Jago, unknown to the local police, is under suspicion but not arrested. He continues to train but he knows he doesn't have a chance against Ebony. The only question is, can Cribb find who's behind the murders before Jago becomes a victim, either in the ring or soon afterward.

Lovesey draws Victorian London in a very descriptive manner, bringing to life the characters and settings in this story, drawing the reader in. The Detective Wore Silk Drawers is not only an engaging tale of a brutal sport but also an interesting take on a powerful woman who runs the training center for the men who participate in it. And not least, it is a strongly plotted mystery that will keep the reader in suspense until the very end. Soho Press is to be commended for re-releasing this outstanding series for a new generation of mystery readers.

Review: One of the "flab five" supper club members is arrested for murder in Stiffs and Swine, the fourth mystery in this delightful series by J. B. Stanley.

Much to the group's delight, they are asked to judge the “Queen Sow Contest” in Hudsonville, Virginia. It would mean an overnight trip causing James Henry, head librarian for the Shenandoah Valley County Library, pause. Recently a large number of teenagers had been visiting the library on Friday nights, not reading or doing homework, just milling around waiting for something to happen. Since they didn't appear to be causing any trouble, James decided to wait until he returned from the contest to look into the matter.

At a charming bed-and-breakfast, the site of the contest, the group meets up with Jimmy Kane, a loud-mouthed flirt who seems to be offending everyone in sight, especially the women. When Kane wins first place for his BBQ brisket, Gillian, one of the supper club members, confronts him, screaming that he is the man who deliberately ran down her husband years ago, killing him. Gillian said that not one day had gone by that she had not wished him dead. The next morning, Kane is found dead in his motor home, Gillian sitting on the steps. The sheriff arrests Gillian for his murder, but the other four supper club members go into amateur sleuth mode. There is clearly no shortage of suspects. And there even seems to be a suspicious link between Kane and the teenagers occupying the library Friday nights.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Stiffs and Swine (in light of the plot, a particularly clever title) is the harmony and camaraderie between the five members of the supper club. A spirit of "all for one and one for all" resonates between the chapters. This diverse group (an ex-professor librarian, sheriff's deputy, mail carrier, high school art teacher, and animal-loving hippie) might appear to be an eccentric and unlikely bunch but their fun-loving and amateur-sleuthing ways are a winsome combination. Add in an interesting and credible mystery plot (and scrumptious-sounding recipes) and the result is, to paraphrase the words of the Queen Sow Contest moderator, a winner.

Mystery Author Martin Edwards Joins Exclusive Detection Club

The Liverpool Daily Post is reporting that UK crime author has been invited to join the exclusive Detection Club. The club, primarily a social one, dates back to 1928 when it was formed by (among others) Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Anthony Berkleley Cox.

Edwards is the author of the Lake District mysteries featuring Detective Chief Inspector Hannah Scarlett and historian Daniel Kind, and the Harry Devlin mystery series. He recently won a CWA Dagger Award for his short story The Bookbinder's Apprentice. His most recent book, Dancing for the Hangman, a departure from his series works, was published in the UK last November but is not (yet) available in the US.

The Detection Club has an interesting oath administered to all new members. Among the questions asked is one regarding the rules of fair play: "Do you promise that your detectives shall well and truly detect the crimes presented to them, using those wits which it may please you to bestow upon them and not placing reliance on nor making use of Divine Revelation, Feminine Intuition, Mumbo-Jumbo, Jiggery-Pokery, Coincidence or the Act of God?"

Mystery Book Review: The Lover's Knot by Clare O'Donohue

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of The Lover's Knot by Clare O'Donohue. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

The Lover's Knot by Clare O'Donohue

by
A Nell Fitzgerald Mystery

Plume (Trade Paperback)
ISBN-10: 0-452-28979-3 (0452289793)
ISBN-13: 978-0-452-28979-6 (9780452289793)
Publication Date: October 2008
List Price: $13.00

Review: Clare O'Donohue introduces Nell Fitzgerald, a New York professional woman who flees the city after her fiancé calls off their wedding, retreating to a small town in upstate New York, the site of her grandmother's quilt shop in The Lover's Knot. But it's not the peaceful place she was expecting when a handyman is murdered and her ex-fiancé turns up as the prime suspect.

Nell thought her life was perfect. She had a terrific job, found New York City an exhilirating city in which to live, and best of all, she was about to be married to the man of her dreams. But all that came to a crashing halt when her fiancé, Ryan, tells her he's not ready for marriage. Nell abruptly takes a leave of absence from her job and departs the city for the comfort of her grandmother's home in Archer's Rest. Eleanor owns Someday Quilts, a quilt shop with an active group of dedicated quilters. Nell is just getting settled in when she meets Marc Reed, the handsome, flirtatious handyman repairing her grandmother's roof. When he's found dead, stabbed with a pair of quilting scissors, the list of suspects seems endless. But most surprising is that Ryan, who had arrived in Archer's Rest to try to talk Nell into returning to the city, is at the top of the list. The local sheriff thinks the murder is open and shut, a case of a jealous man killing a potential rival. Nell doesn't believe it, deciding to pursue her own investigation. But she's also troubled with a bigger question once she proves Ryan innocent: will she go back to the city with him?

The author cleverly uses quilting as a metaphor for life in The Lover's Knot. Just as the skilled quilter charts a quilt from beginning to end, selecting a design, deciding on colors, picking fabric, and so on, so does a person chart their life by choosing a occupation, their schooling and training, their life’s mate, and the like. Sometimes, however, after working on a quilt for a long period of time, it just doesn’t achieve the desired effect the quilter had wanted. So an important question must be answered: Is what has been done worth saving? That is, should they try to stick with what has already been achieved and settle for something less than desired, or should they put it aside and start anew. Sometimes people have to ask that same question. Often it's a very difficult but necessary step to take for one’s future happiness. The Lover's Knot presents this very personal dilemma in the form of a well-written mystery, answering the question for Nell but leaving the reader pondering what they might do in a similar situation. This a strong introduction to a series that promises to be one worth watching.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of The Lover's Knot and to Penguin Group for providing a copy of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Twenty-six-year-old Nell Fitzgerald is thrilled when she receives a gorgeous handmade quilt in a lover’s knot pattern as an engagement gift from her grandmother Eleanor Cassidy. However, her joy is short-lived as her fiancé announces that the wedding is off. Heartbroken, Nell flees New York City for her grandmother’s home in Archers Rest. In this small town Eleanor’s life revolves around her quilt shop, Someday Quilts, and the members of her shops’ quilting circle.

When a local handyman known for his flirting is found murdered in the shop, Nell finds herself drawn into the case -- and drawn to the shy police chief. As a pattern of clues begins to emerge, one of the prime suspects is Nell’s ex-fiancé, whose arrival in Archers Rest seems suspicious, especially to Nell.

With Eleanor and the quilting circle helping out, Nell sets out to solve two mysteries. One is the murder of the local handyman and the other is deciding what future, and what man, is right for her.

First Clues, Mysteries for Kids: The Jonah Bixby Mysteries, Sam & Friends Mysteries, and a Sneak Peek at Skeleton Creek

First Clues: Mysteries for Kids

, your source for information on over 100 mystery series for children and young adults where each series is conveniently listed under three different age categories (New Sleuth, ages 4 to 7; Future Sleuth, aged 7 to 10; and Sleuth in Training, ages 10 and older), is pleased to feature two more series of mysteries on our website.

The Jonah Bixby Mysteries: Kids' Whodunits 2, Crack the Cases!

feature 12-year-old sleuth Jonah Bixby. The two books in the series are written as 20 mini-mysteries for Jonah (and the reader) to solve.

The first book in the series Kids' Whodunits: Catch the Clues!, was published in 2007. The second book, Kids' Whodunits: Crack the Cases! has a scheduled publication date of early February 2009 but is already available to purchase.

Among the latest cases that test Jonah's deductive skills, an escaped convict has sent a cryptic message to his mother on a postcard; what do the strange words mean? Is a house really haunted -- or is someone just pretending to be a ghost? Which of Jonah’s relatives stole a precious ruby necklace from his aunt? Did Mrs. Glower really spot a murder in the house next door? And 16 more!

, written by Hy Conrad and illustrated by Sue Blanchard, are recommended for sleuths in training aged 10 and older.

The Sam & Friends Mysteries: Dracula Madness

The are a companion series to the by Mary Labatt.

In the first book of this graphic novel series, Dracula Madness, Jennie meets Samantha, the sheepdog belonging to her new next-door neighbors. No ordinary dog, Sam is a detective with a nose for sniffing out a mystery even in a small town as uneventful as Woodford. No ordinary girl, Jennie has a special connection with this dog -- Jennie can read Sam's thoughts. After Jennie and her friend Beth show Sam the creepiest house in town, the dog detective is on the case. The weird owner of the house, McIver, must be ... Dracula. Who else would never go outside and never turn the lights on? Why else would bats be flying around his yard? This McIver definitely has something to hide. But is he really a vampire? Fueled by odd combinations of junk food, Sam's boundless energy and fertile imagination sometimes lead everyone a little astray. But even if the mystery turns out to be something less than mysterious, when Sam and friends are on the case, adventure is never far behind.

The are recommended for future sleuths aged 7 to 10.

Skeleton Creek by Patrick Carman

Finally, here's an interesting twist on a mystery book. In Skeleton Creek by Patrick Carman, the story is broken into two parts -- on character's text in the book, and another's videos on a special website, with links and passwords given throughout the book.

Strange things are happening in Skeleton Creek -- and Ryan and Sarah are trying to get to the heart of it. But after an eerie accident leaves Ryan housebound and forbidden to see Sarah, their investigation takes two tracks: Ryan records everything in his journal, while Sarah uses her videocam to search things out -- and then email the clips for Ryan to see.

We're not sure if this is the first of a series or not, but it is an intriguing concept for junior detectives aged 10 and older. The book is scheduled for publication on February 10, 2009, but is available for pre-order. More information about the book can be found at EnterSkeletonCreek.com. View the book trailer below:

Mystery Book Review: The Tenth Case by Joseph Teller

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of The Tenth Case by Joseph Teller. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

The Tenth Case by Joseph Teller

by
A Jaywalker Mystery

Mira Books (Mass Market Paperback)
ISBN-10: 0-7783-2605-5 (0778326055)
ISBN-13: 978-0-7783-2605-2 (9780778326052)
Publication Date: October 2008
List Price: $7.99

Review: Police procedurals abound -- good, bad and indifferent. Now, Joseph Teller’s stellar, The Tenth Case, sets the standard for defense attorney procedurals. Drawing on Teller’s thirty-five year career as a criminal defense attorney, the novel is the first in his projected series starring Harrison J. Walker, a hard-headed, soft-hearted criminal lawyer known in the courts and on the streets as “Jaywalker.” With his commitment to getting his clients a “not guilty” verdict, and a success rate of over ninety percent, he’s the kind of guy you want defending you, guilty or not.

Although he’s eminently successful in getting his clients acquitted, Jaywalker’s got a major problem. His reputation as “a renegade among renegades” has finally caught up with him, especially for an alleged sexual indiscretion, and he is being suspended from practicing law for the next three years. In the meantime, however, he can complete ten of the seventeen cases he listed as primary concerns. The first nine he cleans up in record time but the tenth, a murder case, becomes his make or break, both professionally and personally, and is the substance for the novel.

What distinguishes Teller’s novel is its focus on telling the story based on the procedures and protocols a defense attorney invokes to defend his client, in this case a stunningly beautiful, petite, twenty-six-year old former client of his, Samara Moss aka Samantha Musgrove, now accused of murdering her seventy-year-old ailing husband, allegedly for the proceeds of a multimillion dollar insurance policy. In defending her, Jaywalker, who is “closing in on fifty” has to overcome two obstacles. One is his attraction to her. The other is an apparently iron-clad case against her. And while he reluctantly resists the sexual temptations she tosses his way with his promises to wait until “after”, he meticulously builds a case for her defense, taking the readers through the details of the procedures for dealing with the police and prosecutors, selecting a jury of sympathetic citizens, citing relevant statutes, preparing his potty-mouthed client for her trial, and strategizing on how best to cast suspicion on others and raise reasonable doubt in the jurors’ minds about the bloody murder weapon wrapped in Moss’s blood-soaked blouse and hidden in her bathroom, to which only she had access.

Besides being a cracker-jack of a page-turning mystery with a surprising twist of an ending, Teller’s story provides an insightful background setting for a courtroom drama involving a master manipulator, a straight-up, competent prosecutor and a street-wise former prostitute adept at getting her way with older men. With The Tenth Case, “Jaywalker,” suspended from the bar or not, definitely gets the green light for more of the same in Teller’s projected series.

Special thanks to M. Wayne Cunningham (mw_cunningham@telus.net) for contributing his review of The Tenth Case and to Planned Television Arts for providing a copy of the book for the review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Criminal defense attorney Harrison J. Walker, better known as Jaywalker, has just been suspended for using "creative" tactics and receiving "gratitude" in the courtroom stairwell from a client charged with prostitution. Convincing the judge that his other clients are counting on him, Jaywalker is allowed to complete ten cases. But it's the last case that truly tests his abilities -- and his acquittal record.

Samara Moss -- young, petite and sexy as hell -- stabbed her husband in the heart. Or so everyone believes. Having married the elderly billionaire when she was an eighteen-year-old former prostitute, Samara appears to be the clichéd gold digger. But Jaywalker knows all too well that appearances can be deceiving. Who else could have killed the billionaire? Has Samara been framed? Or is Jaywalker just driven by his need to win his clients' cases -- and this particular client's undying gratitude?

A Coffeehouse Mystery with Clare Cosi

Review: New York coffeehouse owner Clare Cosi investigates a case of apparent mistaken identity, and a fatal one at that, in Espresso Shot, the seventh mystery in this series by Cleo Coyle.

Clare's ex-husband Matteo is getting married. The bride-to-be is beautiful, wealthy, opinionated, and, it probably goes without saying, feared by many and hated by even more. She is Breanne Summour, a senior editor for the powerful and influential Trend magazine. At a bachelor party for Matteo, a look-alike for Breanne shows up to spice things up, as it were, but is shot and killed by an unknown assailant after leaving the party. The police think the shooting may be random violence, but Clare and Matteo believe otherwise. Someone had tried to run Breanne down just a few days earlier and Matteo is convinced, and ultimately convinces Clare, that the two events are related. When someone in Breanne's office is poisoned, it seems certain that Breanne was the target all along. Breanne has a long list of enemies, but the questions facing Clare are, why here and why now?

Espresso Shot bucks a recent trend in theme-driven chick-lit-style cozies by actually developing an interesting murder mystery plot to accompany the inevitable, and usually irrelevant, banter about designer clothes and shoes, dishing of boyfriends and co-workers, and the like. True, Breanne's character opens the door to the potential of name dropping everything in sight, and subtle differences between boutique plantation coffee roasts hardly seem weighty enough material to carry any story, but both are cleverly woven into the extravagant wedding being planned that's at the heart of this story and are not only appropriate and relevant but play a significant role in solving the murders. The interesting plot twist towards the end is also a refreshing and pleasant surprise. Though about 50 pages too long, Espresso Shot is nonetheless a delightful and entertaining mystery. Coffee tips, coffee talk, and recipes follow at the end.

The Guardian Interviews Crime Novelist Dennis Lehane

The Guardian published an interesting interview with crime novelist this morning. Lehane may be best known as the author of , the screen adapation of which was directed by Clint Eastwood and which went on to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards, winning in two categories (Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor). But Lehane's novels have been widely honored elsewhere. His first book, A Drink Before the War, which he says in the interview was originally written in three weeks but rewritten "a score of times", won the in 1995 for Best First P.I. Novel. He has also won the for Sacred, the and for Gone, Baby, Gone (which was also made into a movie), and the , Dilys Award, and Barry Award for Mystic River. One of his more recent novels, Shutter Island, has also been adapted for the screen and is in post-production; the release date for the film is currently October 2009.

Lehane admits that by writing crime fiction he risked being hemmed in as a genre writer. His latest effort, The Given Day, is anything but. A historical novel of epic proportions, weighing in at over 700 pages, Lehane says he spent five years writing it. "I feel like if this bombs, God: it's going to be my Heaven's Gate, my Waterworld." His heart, he says, is finally "exposed".

The Lehane interview ends with a story in which a homeless men saves his life, an incident that reinforced his moral outlook; the generosity that infuses his work. "It's true," he says, of the men who saved him, and it stands just as well for his characters. "There is nothing better than the least of us."

Review: Alex Cross is drawn into the ruthless underworld of Washington D.C. on the hunt for a man known only as "The Tiger" in Cross Country, the 14th thriller featuring the forensic detective in this series by James Patterson.

When Ellie Cox, a college friend of Cross, is killed and mutilated along with her family, the crime attributed to a gang of fearless, riotous teenage boys, Cross knows that he will hunt down their leader, a mysterious figure called the Tiger, no matter how long it takes or where it takes him. Anyone who was known writing about, or checking into the background of, an organization or individuals dealing in drugs, oil, money laundering, and more in the nation's capital become a target for this diabolical warlord. The cold-blooded, brutal murderers he had encountered in the past do not compare with the callous ruthlessness he would soon be a part of. Cross' quest ultimately takes him to Africa where he meets a reporter who had known Ellie and was also seeking information about the Tiger and his murderous escapades for the press. The person or persons giving the orders on what family should be killed next remains, however, a mystery. Alex turns to the CIA for help but their help is in short supply. Soon Cross the hunter becomes Cross the hunted in the decrepit, dilapidated, and decaying cities of Africa. He is arrested, jailed and tortured for three days, before the CIA is able to get him released. Cross sees the most horrible situations for men, women and children that could possibly exist. And he is forced not only to watch it as it happens, but to become a part of it.

Cross Country is one of the most perplexing entries in this long-running series. In many ways it is atypical and fans of the Cross mysteries may be disappointed that the plot is more action-oriented adventure than psychological thriller. As in previous books, Cross is expected to deal with the worst kind of criminal, but here, the images evoked are far more horrific than anything previously written. It's really overwhelming. One might wish that Cross finally marry his sweetheart and take Nana and the kids on a long vacation together somewhere sunny and warm, far away from what he experiences here, and leave the horror of murder to someone else. But what makes Cross such a powerful character in crime fiction is that he perseveres, always certain that his work makes a difference, if only to just one person.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of Cross Country and to Margo Nauert for providing a copy of the book for this review.

AgathaChristie.com Launches New American Site

AgathaChristie.com

The estate of Agatha Christie has just relaunched the author's website, AgathaChristie.com, for the American audience with new features and an emphasis on engaging the visitor into the world of the famous writer.

First time visitors will appreciate the wealth of information available, from background information on Christie's characters (and even a couple of sidekicks) to brief synopses of all the books and stories.

We found the suggested reading order for Christie to be particularly informative. The guidelines suggest it is possible to read, for example, Poirot in any order but note the following points: Read Curtain last, Lord Edgware Dies should be read before After the Funeral, Five Little Pigs should be read before Elephants Can Remember, Cat Among the Pigeons should be read before Hallowe’en Party, Mrs McGinty’s Dead should be read before Hallowe’en Party and Elephants Can Remember, and Murder on the Orient Express should be read before Murder in Mesopotamia. The guidelines for Miss Marple aren't nearly so complicated but they do recommend reading the books out of publication order for maximum enjoyment.

The site has a shop but we'd like to recommend you take a look at some of our own pages for Agatha Christie movies, games, and books.
Agatha Christie DVDs are available at in the following categories: , , and .

Mystery Bestsellers for January 23, 2009

Mystery Bestsellers

A list of the top 15 for the week ending January 23, 2009 has been posted on the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books website.

The third between-the-numbers mystery featuring bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, Plum Spooky by retains the top spot this week with some shuffling in the order among last week's top six.

Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell

New this week at number 7 is 's debut mystery, Beat the Reaper. Meet Peter Brown, a young Manhattan emergency room doctor with an unusual past that is just about to catch up with him. His morning begins with the quick disarming of a would-be mugger, followed by a steamy elevator encounter with a sexy young pharmaceutical rep, topped off by a visit with a new patient -- and from there Peter's day is going to get a whole lot worse and a whole lot weirder. Because that patient knows Peter from his other life, when he had a different name and a very different job. The only reason he's a doctor now is thanks to the Witness Protection Program -- and even they can't protect him from the long reach of the New Jersey mob. Now he's got to do whatever it takes to keep his patient alive so he can buy some time ... and beat the reaper. Publishers Weekly calls Beat the Reaper "[a] breezy and darkly comic suspense novel" and adds "The hero's wry narrative voice, coupled with Bazells artful use of flashbacks to sustain tension and fill in Pietro's past, are a winning combination."

Eclipse by Richard North Patterson

New in the top 15 this week, but actually debuting on the list last week, is the latest topical thriller from , Eclipse. Damon Pierce’s life has just reached a defining moment: a gifted California lawyer, he’s being divorced by his wife and his work often seems soulless. Then he receives a frantic e-mail from Marissa Brand Okari -- a woman he loved years ago -- and decides to risk everything to respond to her plea for help. Marissa’s husband, Bobby Okari, is the charismatic leader of a freedom movement in the volatile west African nation of Luandia, which is being torn apart by the world’s craving for its vast supply of oil. Bobby’s outspoken opposition to the exploitation of his homeland by PetroGlobal -- a giant American oil company with close ties to Luandia’s brutal government -- has enraged General Savior Karama, the country’s autocratic ruler. After Bobby leads a protest rally during a full eclipse of the sun, everyone in his home village is massacred by government troops. And now Bobby has been arrested and charged with the murder of three PetroGlobal workers. Still drawn to Marissa, Pierce agrees to defend Bobby, hoping to save both Bobby and Marissa from almost certain death. But the lethal politics of Luandia may cost Pierce his life instead. Getting a starred review from Publishers Weekly which said "This stellar legal thriller ... both informs and entertains", adding "Patterson has exerted all his considerable skill in creating a nightmare atmosphere that will cling to readers long after the last page is turned."

Mounting Fears by Stuart Woods

Finally, in 15th position is Mounting Fears, the 7th Will Lee political thriller by . President Lee is having a rough week. As he prepares for the upcoming election, the usually cool and collected President has several crises going on at once, from loose nukes to a close political ally with skeletons in his closet. And as if that weren’t enough, Kate Rule Lee, his first lady and CIA director, is contending with another threat: the return of a dangerous and unusually cunning fugitive Teddy Fay. There’s plenty of the usual trouble to be found in Washington, from double-crossing political appointees to an impending sex scandal. But with the threat from abroad looming, the President puts every resource he has -- including Lance Cabot and Holly Barker -- into damage control as the clock ticks down to election night. From the seedy world of muckraking journalism to the murderous hotspots of Central America, there’s enough intrigue to keep even the sharpest and most daring of intelligence agents on edge.

Review: Donald G. Geddes, III, introduces Peter Grant on the trail of a stolen masterpiece in Venice in Ruins of Grandeur, the first of a trilogy of mysteries featuring the international art sleuth.

Peter is hired by Lloyd's of London to recover a missing Bellini, a masterpiece presumably stolen from a Duke's residence in Venice. Peter's ex-wife happens to live in Venice, but upon arrival he's disappointed to learn she's vacationing elsewhere on the Continent. He quickly discovers that the missing painting is just one of a large number of religious artifacts that have recently disappeared, including one taken from a monk who was killed in Venice while returning to Rome from Murano. The police have no suspects until Peter is presented as one when the police convince him to pose as a thief and then a dead woman turns up in his apartment. Pursued by the police and by the real criminals who believe he knows too much, Peter must save himself before he's a victim himself.

Ruins of Grandeur tries to be light, romantic comedy as well as serious suspense fiction coupled with international action intrigue but never quite strikes the right balance between any of them. Peter Grant is clearly patterned after the ever-suave Cary Grant (the similarity in their names almost certainly not a coincidence) and the plot seems written more as the basis for a screenplay than as a novel. The Venice setting is spendidly descriptive and most of the characters are creatively drawn if a bit shallow and stereotypical. But the story lacks substance and after adopting a decidedly leisurely pace for much of the narrative, the ending is overly rushed which may be an attempt disguise the fact that the resolution to the various crimes is quite illogical. On balance, though, Ruins of Grandeur is a pleasantly entertaining if undemanding mystery.

List Price: $25.00

Review: Sub-Inspector Max Romero of the Granada police force investigates the potentially politically motivated murder of a young Muslim woman in Blood Wedding, the first mystery in this series by P. J. Brooke.

Leila, a graduate student from Edinburgh, had been in Granada interviewing 83-year-old Paula Romero, Max’s grandmother, who had lived during the Spanish civil war and had many stories to tell that were not in history books. Leila was only 23 and led a somewhat wilder life than her father would have liked. She dated Hussan, a man who was thought to be a member of a Muslim terrorist group, but also kept company with a few married men. At the time, there was much turmoil in Spain as the country had recently joined forces with England and the United States to support the war in Iraq. The opposition was considerable and vocal. There was also competition and resentment among the various religious groups in and around Granada, between Muslims and Palestinians, the Palestinians and the Christians, the Christians and the Muslims. The police are on constant vigil to uncover terrorist cells and shut them down.

When Leila’s body is found, Hussan becomes the first, obvious, and only suspect by the police. She had been seen having a passionate argument near the time and the site of her death. Plus, he was a Muslim whose name was on a list as a possible terrorist. Max, however, wants more proof. In custody, Hussan is tortured and ultimately commits suicide, closing the murder case in the eyes of the authorities. Against orders, however, Max continues his quest, seeking out the married men Leila had been seen with. He is shocked and appalled to find one of the men is his cousin and best friend from childhood, Juan. Leila had insisted that he leave his wife and family for her. He had refused. She threatened to tell all. Did Juan kill Leila? Max can't be sure. He continues his pursuit for the truth, risking not only his job, but his life.

There is a considerable amount of backstory involving the Spanish civil war and the reign of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. While certainly of interest, especially when considered in comparison to the current unrest in Spain, it makes the main plot and its various threads seem overly complicated. Still, at its core, Blood Wedding is not only an intriguing murder mystery but also a beautifully written book with a powerful message, the story of a man who, against all odds, believes in the truth and the basic good of humanity, and a family whose love surmounts all evils.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of Blood Wedding and to Soho Press for providing a copy of the book for this review.

Bid on Mysterious Destinations at the LuxuryLink.com Mystery Auction

OK, we realize it's a bit of a stretch to link mystery books to travel sites (we travel, we read, close enough), but we couldn't help it after we saw an ad for the LuxuryLink.com Mystery Auction.

We've actually used LuxuryLink.com before, bidding on a travel package (but never bidding high enough). This is an interesting twist on the concept. Two mystery destinations are featured each week and each auction begins with a $1 starting bid. Subsequent bids are in $1 increments. While LuxuryLink.com will only reveal the name of the property to the auction winner, hints to the location of the luxury property will be updated on the website.

LuxuryLink.com provides a list of the previous destinations on the Mystery Auction webpage. Most are pretty impressive.

If you're curious, check out the site by clicking on the banner below. And if you do jet off to your mystery destination, remember to take along a mystery book! (See, we've linked the two again.)

List Price: $13.95

Review: Joyce and Jim Lavene introduce Mary Catherine Roberts, a middle-aged, four-times widowed (on the look out for number five), radio talk show host who also happens to be a pet psychic, in The Telltale Turtle.

Mary Catherine has returned to her hometown of Wilmington, leaving Hollywood after the untimely death of her fourth husband. Her aunt has died and left her run-down home that she has remodeled, creating a veterinarian clinic/hospital on the first floor and her residence on the second. When she begins her pet psychic talk show on the local radio station she thinks her life is all-embracing. Of course, she wouldn’t mind maybe seeking out a fifth husband to make her life complete. On her show, she offers worried pet owners advice on how to make their animals happier and easier to get along with. Her own pet, Baylor, a sizeable orange-colored tabby cat, helps her in the more perplexing situations.

When Mary Catherine finds a murdered woman, the wealthy aunt of her station manager Colin Jamison, more men enter her life than she’s willing to handle. A mysterious private investigator, Charlie Dowd, becomes an unwanted side-kick. She can’t figure out if he is investigating her or digging up proof of an affair Colin may be having. Bernie, a homeless handyman with a goat, shows up and offers to make repairs on her home, in exchange for a place to keep the goat. Buck Maybelle, owner of Meaty Boy Dog Food, is not only fond of Mary Catherine but wants her to take his company on as her sponsor. These characters all intertwine throughout the mystery of the murder of Colin’s aunt, killed with the broken bowl of her injured turtle. Although the authorities have identified Colin as their prime suspect, the turtle somehow convinces Mary Catherine that someone else killed Colin’s aunt. Will Mary Catherine be able to prove this before she herself becomes a victim of the unknown killer?

The Telltale Turtle is a riotous, imaginative story with of a most unusual woman as the lead character. The reader never knows who, or rather what, Mary Catherine will speak to next and the personalities of the various animals are a treat unto themselves. The mystery isn't demanding, and the whole concept may be a bit far-fetched for some, but it does provide an interesting twist on the standard cozy.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of The Telltale Turtle and to Midnight Ink for providing a copy of the book for this review.

Mysteries on TV: MI-5, Moonlight, The Rockford Files, and Waking the Dead, New This Week on DVD

Mysteries on TV

, your source for the most complete selection of detective, amateur sleuth, private investigator, and suspense television mystery series now available or coming soon to DVD, is profiling four series that have season DVDs being released this week.

The UK spy series Spooks airs as in the US. Based on the secret British intelligence agency, the series has a large ensemble cast that portray the agents of MI-5 with the mission of protecting the country's national security. They do not exist, you will never know their names.

The series stars Peter Firth as Sir Harry James Pearce, head of the counter-terrorism department. In addition to Firth, the only cast member to be a part of all 6 seasons to date is Hugh Simon who plays Malcolm Wynn-Jones, a technician and data analyst.

The MI-5 (Spooks): Volume Six DVD set of 5 discs contains the 10 episodes of the sixth season that aired on BBC-1 during the late fall of 2007. The series recently completed its 7th season. More information can be found on the official Spooks website on BBC.co.uk.

Trying to capitalize on the trend of vampires as private investigators (or almost anything else), CBS developed , a crime drama that aired for just one season. The series starred Alex O'Loughlin as LA PI Mick St. John, an immortal vampire bitten 60 years ago by his bride Coraline on their wedding night. Sophia Myles played his current mortal girlfriend, reporter Beth Turner. The complications of their relationship form the backdrop for many of the series episodes.

Though crime dramas currently dominate on CBS and Moonlight would have seemed a good fit, the series high costs and relatively low viewership led to the network cancelling the show after just one season.

The Moonlight: The Complete Series DVD set of 4 discs contains the 16 episodes its only season that aired on CBS from September 2007 through May 2008.

One of the classic series from the 1970s, and maybe all time, was . The series starred James Garner as Jim Rockford, a Los Angeles private investigator who lived in a trailer in a Malibu parking lot. Noah Beery Jr. played Rockford's father Rocky, and Joe Santos LA Police Lt. Dennis Becker.

The series ran for 6 seasons on NBC. Almost 15 years after The Rockford Files ended, a total of 8 made-for-television movies based on the series aired from 1994 through 1999.

The Rockford Files: Season Six DVD set of 3 discs contains the 10 episodes of the sixth and final season that aired September 1979 to January 1980. (It was cancelled mid-season.) James Garner was nominated for an Emmy five times, winning once, and the series itself was awarded an Emmy as best drama series in 1978.

The BBC's cold case crime drama, , debuted in 2000 and remains in production today having just completed its 7th season. An 8th season has been confirmed. The series stars Trevor Eve as Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd of the Metropolitan Police Service's Cold Case Unit, set up to investigate old cases where new evidence or links to modern day crimes have come to light. Using advanced techniques in forensic science, the team gets under the skin of some tough cold cases, often taking risks in order to discover the truth and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Each season of the series consists of 4 to 6 episodes airing in 2 parts over consecutive nights.

The Waking the Dead: Season Three DVD set of 2 discs contains the 4 episodes that aired in the fall of 2003. More information can be found on the official Waking the Dead website on BBC.co.uk.

Finally, also being released this week are the four seasons of starring Peter Davison as Detective Constable "Dangerous" Davies, now available as The Last Detective: The Complete Series.

Mystery Book Review: The King of Swords by Nick Stone

A Max Mingus Mystery

Review: Nick Stone's second Max Mingus thriller, The King of Swords, is a prequel that takes place over a two year period from late 1980 through late 1982 while Mingus was still a detective in the elite Miami Task Force division of the police department.

Max and his partner Joe Liston are initially assigned to investigate the suspicious death of a man found in a local primate zoo. But they are shocked to discover the man's family has also been brutally murdered, and the suspect in the killings was the dead man himself. A torn up tarot card in the man's stomach suggests the deaths may be related to the increasingly powerful Haitian drug traffickers, but Max and Joe are pressured to pin the murders on someone else. Deciding that the best approach to solving the crime is to work independent of their superiors, the two detectives embark on a dangerous trail following the elusive Solomon Boukman, a man so powerful and feared that few dare to cross him.

What constitutes ethical (or even legal) behavior in the Miami Police Department as depicted in The King of Swords is at the core of the story. Though Max and Joe are relatively free of corruption, at least in comparison to some of their co-workers, neither can claim the high moral ground here. And that's one of the strengths of the book: how these two, basically good cops, negotiate the treacherous politics of their department, knowing that some of what they are doing is as wrong as the actions of the criminals they are chasing, yet trying to achieve the greater good. It's not that the end always justifies the means, but that the means aren't always as clearly defined as one might want. The plot effectively weaves the mysterious world of voodoo into their investigation and the character of Solomon Boukman (if he even exists) is particularly well established. Though there is a considerable amount of violence (both on the part of the police and the criminal sector), much of it takes place off stage, leaving many of the gruesome details to the reader's imagination.

A superbly crafted thriller to be sure, and a well-written one at that, the last chapters of The King of Swords are nonetheless somewhat disquieting as the book really doesn't have clean ending. Without revealing too much here, the ambiguous conclusion may leave some readers wondering what happens next. Since this is a prequel, it's known Max leaves the police department to become a private investigator. Still, the unknown is unsettling. But maybe that's what the author intended.

Special thanks to Susan Schwartzman Public Relations for providing a copy of The King of Swords for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Miami, 1981 – aka: Cocaine Central, Murder Capital USA, the new Dodge City …

When Detective Max Mingus and his partner Joe are called to the scene of a death at Miami's Primate Park, it looks like another routine - if slightly bizarre - investigation. Until two things turn up: the victim's family, slaughtered; and a partly digested tarot card in the dead man's stomach - "The King of Swords".

An increasingly bloody trail leads Max and Joe first to a sinister fortune-teller and her scheming pimp son, then to the infamous Solomon Boukman. Few have ever met the most feared criminal in Miami, but rumors abound of a forked tongue, voodoo ceremonies, human sacrifice, zombies and friends in very high places.

Against a backdrop of black magic and police corruption, Max and Joe must distinguish the good guys from the bad - and track down some answers. What is the significance of the "King of Swords"? What makes those who have swallowed the card go on a killing spree just before they die? And can Max find out the truth about Solomon Boukman, before death's shadow reaches his own front door ...

Review: When lawyer Cameron Thorne stumbled into a troublemaking treasure hunter at his local library, he had no idea what the man could possibly be after, or the danger he was getting himself into. Like most readers of this novel, Thorne thought that there was nothing remarkable about his hometown of Westford, Massachusetts. He had barely heard the local legends surrounding the Westford Knight, the Newport Tower, and their mysterious past. A Templar Knight discovering America a hundred years before Columbus? A secret buried in America’s past, denied by historians and religious leaders alike? Unbelievable! Yet Thorne soon realizes there is more to these legends than meets the eye, and he is drawn into a complex web of mystery, danger and conspiracy, spiraling from local legend into historical fact and, finally, religious reality.

David S. Brody’s The Cabal of the Westford Knight is an excellent historical conspiracy thriller. It builds on its most famous predecessor, The Da Vinci Code, and takes it once step farther -- and across the Atlantic. Like Da Vinci, The Cabal of the Westford Knight uses existing people, places, and historical events, skillfully interweaving fact and fiction. Although Brody works hard to build the case for his premises, some mainstream history lovers will have to suspend their disbelief in the interests of a good story -- but it’s worth it.

Brody’s strength lies in his careful development of the facts he presents, slowly building his case and advancing his story. His character development likewise builds slowly, but works consistently and convincingly, and the book’s suspense draws readers in and keeps them hooked. History lessons are here mixed with thrilling chase scenes, double-crossings, and murder.

Body takes care to make his case as realistic as possible, spending time on historical explanations, including sources and photographs. As the book goes on, however, the puzzle becomes more and more complicated and difficult to follow, and Brody continues to introduce new twists but spends less time carefully convincing readers of facts. This significantly weakens the book’s conclusion, which can feel overly long and convoluted. In the end, however, The Cabal of the Westford Knight is a great story, fun to read, and smart, if slightly overambitious. Readers will love considering Brody’s facts and drawing their own conclusions about where fiction stops and reality begins.

John Mortimer Died Leaving Unfinished Rumpole Novel

In a follow-up on the death of mystery writer John Mortimer, the Telegraph is reporting that the author died leaving an unfinished Rumpole of the Bailey novel.

Tentatively titled Rumpole and the Younger Generation, the London barrister was to become a victim of crime, attacked by a gang following a concert in Oxford at which his niece performed.

"Sadly I don't think there is any hope of it being published now as there just wasn't enough of it, unless, of course, we could find a writer who might be prepared to take it on," said Tony Lacey, the publishing director at Penguin and Mortimer's long-standing editor.

Hmm. We are aware of several unfinished novels being completed, sometimes by a ghost writer, other times by well-known authors, and while for the most part it works out well, we would prefer that the body of Mortimer's work remain as it is. Though Rumpole was tireless in his efforts and his work was never done, the existence of an unfinished novel has its own charm and adds a quiet, ironic footnote to the series.

Review: As his summer vacation begins, Colorado State University basketball star Damion Flood aka “Blood” is looking forward to entering medical school after turning down a lucrative contract as an NBA professional. His best buddy, Shandell Bird, the “Blackbird” of the “Bird and Blood” duo, has signed a multi-million dollar contract with endorsements that will leave him set for life. But by summer’s end when a university professor asks Flood what he did for his summer’s vacation, Damion responds, “I tracked down the murderer of my best friend.” It’s a perfect summary for Robert Greer’s hard-hitting novel of a behind-the-scenes look at two young men considering the pursuit of their careers, with one openly making the right decisions, the other ending up dead while trying to take his life-long secrets to the grave.

Although the novel is one in the CJ Floyd mysteries, the master bail bondsman is away on his honeymoon, leaving his partner, ex-marine Flora Jean Benson to look after the business and keep his godson Damion on the straight and narrow. It’s no mean feat for Flora Jean as Damion sets about on a determined effort to find Bird’s killer, sometimes enlisting her help, at others flying solo. As he follows the clues and tracks teammates, coaches and trainers, Blood discovers particulars he’d sooner not know about his former best friend, like allegations of points shaving, connections to gamblers, and suspicions of using and peddling performance enhancing drugs. And when it seems it can’t get any worse, it does as Blood uncovers the worst secret of all for a professional male athlete, which raises additional allegations of blackmail and involves Bird’s gold digging girlfriend, his manipulative dead-beat father, a college sports psychologist, various locker room hangers-on, a former Pulitzer prize-winning author and a gambling czar with an MBA and a sidekick with an itchy trigger finger. A midget hitman with a .30-06 makes a cameo appearance as well. Damion’s team has its own heavy hitters, however, such as Flora Jean, and the 84-year-old Mafia Don and family friend, Mario Satoni and his enforcer “Pinkie,” and Damion’s lawyer mother, Julie, as well as the occasional bits of sage advice from the honeymooning, CJ Floyd. They all get their chance to play as Damion solves not only Bird’s untimely farewell but a copycat killing as well before he heads on to his medical career.

An intriguing read with an authentic setting in college athletics, Blackbird, Farewell, racks up another winner for author Robert Greer.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Shandell “Blackbird” Bird has everything going for him, or so he thinks. Recently selected number two overall in the NBA draft, the 6'8", 250-pound superstar has a gleaming new ride and a salary and athletic shoe contract that make him an instant millionaire. What he doesn’t have is the ability to bury secrets from his past.

When Shandell is found shot to death at mid-court, his best friend and college teammate Damion Madrid sets out to find the killer. Damion is well meaning but naïve; luckily his godfather is gumshoe CJ Floyd. Floyd and his partner, Flora Jean Benson, are there to watch his back as Damion stumbles down a shadowy trail that leads to Shandell’s purported peddling of steroids and big-game point shaving. When he discovers a “Blackbird” he never knew and is able to put a face on Shandell’s killer, Damion finds himself in over his head. Will CJ be there in time to prevent his godson from joining Shandell?

MediaBlvd Magazine Interviews Mystery Author Jason Pinter

MediaBlvd Magazine published an interview with thriller writer today. Pinter is the author of the Henry Parker mysteries, two of the most recent of which we've had the pleasure of reviewing for , The Guilty and The Stolen.

Henry Parker is a young investigative journalist in New York City. In the interview, Pinter reveals a little about the next in the series. "The Fury is the most personal story Henry has had to face yet. Through the first three books, we’ve learned a little bit about his life before he came to New York, but in this book he finds out that there’s one massive skeleton in his family’s closet that is now coming back to haunt him. But, what he finds out is just the tip of the iceberg, and the start of a big storyline that will continue into the next Henry Parker novel, The Darkness, which will be out in November 2009, just a month after The Fury hits shelves."

And his sage advice to aspiring writers? "The most important thing is to write what you love and write the kind of book that you would want to read."

Reggie is a relatively new member of the staff of the National Gallery in London. She is given the assignment to set up a small exhibition enveloping three paintings by the 1600's Italian master Caravaggio collectively titled “St. Cecelia and the Angel.” It would really be a feather in her cap if she were able to pull it off. One of the paintings is on display the Getty Museum in California. Another is in the Louvre in Paris. The third is in the possession of a private party, an elderly lady in France, Mme. Juliette Rigaut. Reggie goes to visit Mme. Rigaut’s son, Jean-Jacques, an Interior Minister but having grand aspirations of becoming President of France one day, initially agrees but abruptly changes his mind saying he is part owner of the painting and refusing to allow it to be loaned. Not only that, he forces the Louvre to reverse its decision to agree to loan their Caravaggio. But now the situation is even more complicated: her quest to bring together the three paintings reveals a fourth "Angel". Could this truly be the find of a lifetime or more likely a forgery? Or is it genuine and one of the existing three paintings is in reality a fake? Soon people involved with her assignment begin to die, accidents possibly, murder almost certainly. Will she be able to determine the truth before she becomes a casualty?

Caravaggio's Angel is a wonderful introduction for this amateur sleuth. The story draws the reader into the complex, secretive world of art treasures and Reggie is quite endearing. The plot is sufficiently intricate to capture the imagination without being overly convoluted. A minor annoyance, typical of many international mysteries, is the inclusion of words or phrases in the local language. Here, for example, whole sentences are in French and it is difficult, if not impossible, from the context to determine what exactly is being said. There are far better, and more effective, ways of introducing an international flavor to a book. It's pretentious, it unnecessarily interrupts the flow of the narrative, leaves the reader ignorant of something potentially important, and makes the book slightly less enjoyable than it otherwise might have been.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of Caravaggio's Angel and to Soho Press for providing a copy of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Dr. Reggie Lee, a new arrival at the National Gallery, is organizing a small exhibition around three Caravaggio paintings depicting "St. Cecilia and the Angel". One is at the Getty, one at the Louvre, and she assumes it won't be too hard to track down the third. But inexplicable obstacles keep getting in her way -- and then, unexpectedly, a fourth Caravaggio turns up. One of them must be a fake. But which?

When people start to die, it's horribly clear that someone doesn't want Reggie's show to go ahead. Why, she can't imagine. But her career is at stake, and she's damned if she'll let herself be intimidated by these unseen forces. So Reggie sets out to discover the truth, on a trail that leads her from Surrealist suicides to Italian art dealers, from 17th-century painting techniques to modern French politics. By the end it seems as though nobody in the world of international art can truly be deemed incorruptible -- perhaps not even Reggie herself.

Mystery Book Review: The Darker Side by Cody McFadyen

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of The Darker Side by Cody McFadyen. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

The Darker Side by Cody McFadyen

by
A Smoky Barrett Mystery

Bantam (Hardcover)
ISBN-10: 0-553-80694-7 (0553806947)
ISBN-13: 978-0-553-80694-6 (9780553806946)
Publication Date: September 2008
List Price: $24.00

Review: FBI special agent Smoky Barrett and her team are on the trail of a ruthless serial killer dubbed the Preacher in The Darker Side, the third thriller in this series by Cody McFadyen.

Smoky is brought in when one of the victims is the estranged daughter of a potential Presidential candidate. She had been killed while on board a jet in mid-air with a sharp object thrust precisely into her heart. The killer's calling card was a silver cross placed in the wound, etched with a symbol and a number -- 143. As Smoky points out, there is only one thing a killer counts. She's soon proved right; another victim is found just days later with a similar cross and the number 142 etched on it. But in an unusual twist, the killer starts posting information about his crimes on the internet, outline their sins. The Preacher, as Smoky comes to identify him, announces he's not through and the next victim will be a child. Smoky and her team are in a race against time to find the Preacher before he kills again.

The Darker Side is in many ways a riveting thriller. The writing is crisp, the characters clearly delineated, and plot well paced. What it lacks, somewhat ironically, is suspense. Smoky and her team don't lead so much as follow. The Preacher wants to be caught and leaves all sorts of clues as to where he is and how to find him. At one point he says as much. So while the book is definitely a page-turner (as it were), the direction it takes is not unexpected. In the end it's ever so slightly disappointing, that there wasn't a plot twist that might surprise the reader, and place it among the best in class.

The narrative might have been more tightly wound had there not been so many backstories. Some are clearly necessary; many are not. And the sin and redemption aspect is somewhat overwrought, especially towards the end among Smoky and her team. True, everyone has a deep seated secret, but it's simply too much to have so many of the recurring characters confess to theirs in one setting.

Still and all, The Darker Side is provocative, intense, and eminently enjoyable as a thriller.

In the Electric Mist, based on the James Lee Burke mystery, Direct to DVD

We're not sure when it was first announced that In the Electric Mist, the movie adaptation of the mystery In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead, was going straight to DVD, but we missed it. We stumbled upon an article in The Daily Iberian from January 9th reporting that the movie, which was filmed in and around New Iberia, Louisiana last year, is scheduled to be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on March 3rd with a limited release in local theaters sometime thereafter.

It's usually never a good sign when the studio elects to skip a national theatrical release, opting instead for direct to DVD. Even more so when the caliber of the stars is so high. Tommy Lee Jones plays Cajun detective Dave Robicheaux in what we think is a stroke of casting genius. The movie also stars John Goodman, Kelly Macdonald, Mary Steenburgen, and Ned Beatty.

Still, we're excited. Tommy Lee Jones is one of our favorite actors (though he tested us in , a movie we really didn't like, his character being the only redeeming feature) and James Lee Burke is about the best writer of atmospheric crime fiction. So rather than seeing it on the big screen, we'll settle for the DVD in the comfort of our own home.

Look for In the Electric Mist on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in early March.

Review written by Kevin, Age 11, Grade 6. Date of review: January 2009.

Review: Down the Rabbit Hole is a very good hard case crime, action filled, and comedy packed book. This book is just the ingredient for an evening full of suspense and fun. This superb crime novel is written by Peter Abrahams and is the first book in a wonderful series. The 13 year old female main character, Ingrid, has countless passion and talent for theater and soccer and has a great personality.

As Ingrid is in the doctor’s office waiting for her mom to pick her up to go to soccer practice, she realizes that her mom is very late. She decides to run to soccer practice. She gets lost and ends up in the flats of Echo Falls. Here she meets a very strange lady whom her friends call “Cracked up Katie” but her real name is Katherine Kovac. Ingrid stays in her house until the taxi arrives. When the taxi arrives she accidently leaves her cleats at Katherine’s place. The next day Katherine ends up dead, strangled. Ingrid one day fakes that she is sick and she tries to find evidence related to who killed Katherine. The next day she needs her cleats back because her family has noticed the absence of them. In the dead of the night she sneaks out and breaks into Katherine’s house and looks for them. She finds them upstairs in a pile of evidence. She slithers under the police tape and quietly grabs the shoes from the evidence pile. When she turns to leave she hears a noise and hides under the bed. The window shatters and a man’s feet come into view. She doesn’t know who’s they are but she is keeping it in the back of her mind. Ingrid auditions for the role of Alice in Alice in Wonderland. In the end she puts the evidence together with some more that she gets from the theater but will it be enough to solve the crime!

I really liked how the author put numerous suspenseful moments together to create just the right effect for the book. I also liked the different characters and the personalities that they withhold. One thing that I didn’t like is the abrupt movement of different scenes. That kind of threw me off, but only a little. The reason to read the book is because of the way that suspense, action, and comedy clash to make the perfect taste of entertainment to satisfy your needs. I would highly recommend this book to mostly pre-teens to adults. Most of the content is too mature and young children will not understand it. Overall the book was great with very little flaws and infinite memorable moments in this hard case crime.

Mysteries on TV: Lovejoy, Matlock, and Walker Texas Ranger, New This Week on DVD

Mysteries on TV

, your source for the most complete selection of detective, amateur sleuth, private investigator, and suspense television mystery series now available or coming soon to DVD, is profiling three series that have season DVDs being released this week.

For 6 seasons Ian McShane starred as antiques dealer and part-time detective , a series that aired on an irregular schedule on BBC from 1986 through 1994. The series was loosely based on the novels by Jonathan Gash (pen name of John Grant) featuring the character of Lovejoy.

The fourth season was the last one featuring many of the original cast members, including Lady Jane Felsham (Phyllis Logan) who leaves at the end of the season ostensibly to work in America as an interior designer.

The Lovejoy: Season Four DVD set of 4 discs contains the 13 episodes of the fourth season that aired on BBC during the spring of 1993.

Andy Griffith starred at defense attorney Ben Matlock, a Harvard-educated, quick-tempered southerner who charged $100,000 as a retainer to defend his clients in , a crime drama that aired on NBC (and later on ABC) from 1986 through 1995. The series was created by Dean Hargrove who was also responsible for several other mystery series including the revival of (a series it strongly resembled), , the Father Dowling mysteries, and more.

For the first season, Linda Purl played Matlock's daughter and legal partner Charlene. Electing not to return for a second season, Purl was replaced by Nancy Stafford who played attorney Michelle Thomas who joined the Matlock legal firm. Kene Holliday returned as private investigator Tyler Hudson.

The Matlock: Season Two DVD set of 6 discs contains the 21 episodes (including several 2 part episodes) of the second season that aired on NBC from September 1986 through May 1987.

Chuck Norris starred as Cordell Walker, a Texas Ranger ans martial arts expert, in , an action-oriented crime drama that aired on CBS for 9 seasons. The series also starred former Dallas Cowboy Jimmy Trivette (played by Clarence Gilyard) who typically took a more high-tech approach to solving crime in contrast to Walker's more "personal", hands-on style. Sheree J. Wilson played Assistant District Attorney Alex Cahill.

The Walker, Texas Ranger: Season Six DVD set of 6 discs contains the 23 episodes of the sixth season that aired on CBS from October 1997 through May 1998. Note that the season DVDs of Walker, Texas Ranger have been released out of order. Also, the series was originally a mid-season replacement in 1993 so these first few episodes plus those of the following year are combined into a single first season on the DVD.

Mystery Book Review: Defending Angels by Mary Stanton

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of Defending Angels by Mary Stanton. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

Defending Angels by Mary Stanton

by
A Beaufort and Company Mystery

Berkley Prime Crime (Mass Market Paperback)
ISBN-10: 0-425-22498-8 (0425224988)
ISBN-13: 978-0-425-22498-4 (9780425224984)
Publication Date: December 2008
List Price: $7.99

Review: Mary Stanton introduces Savannah lawyer Briana "Bree" Winston Beaufort in the paranormal mystery Defending Angels, a cross of sorts between a Jessica Fletcher-style cozy and a Harry Potter-type investigation.

Bree moves to Savannah to take over her late uncle's law practice, locating a perfect suite of offices in a most unlikely location: a rambling house in the middle of a cemetery. The furnishings her new space include a painting that both attracts and repels her. When she decides to be rid of it, several people mysteriously tell her it's not possible. Her new assistant simply states, "Well, my dear, you can't, of course. It's one of the copies of the Rise of the Cormorant." This statement is lost on Bree but she doesn't have time to ponder it; she has her first case, the murder of billionaire Benjamin Skinner. Her client: the late Benjamin Skinner. She is quickly introduced to the Court of Celestial Law by her old professor and mentor which wants to try Skinner for the crime of greed. Bree agrees to defend him, but there's still the little matter of who killed him.

The strong characters of Defending Angels overcome what is a decidedly odd, and seemingly complicated, plot. Bree and her family, especially her winsome sister Antonia, are all charmingly normal while the characters that populate the rest of the story are quirky without being annoying, eccentric without being weird. That the overall impression of the book is Southern gothic is a given; it's just that as so much seems to be thrown at Bree at once, it's much the same for the reader. Though the pace is measured, even leisurely, there's a sense of being engulfed by the story, not unlike the effect the mysterious painting in Bree's office has on her. Maybe now that Bree's introduction to readers is effected, subsequent entries in this series may be easier to envisage and enjoy.

One of America’s greatest songwriters, Irving Berlin, is being accused of stealing music brought to him for review. The accuser: Scott Joplin. And this isn't the first time. Five years earlier when Berlin’s Alexander’s Ragtime Band was released, Joplin swore he had written the music, submitting it to Berlin for possible publication. Joplin said that Berlin had told him it was no good, but then published it under his own name. Though this could not be proven, many in the music world thought it could possibly be true. Now Joplin is sick and dying. He has written If, a musical drama for the theatre. He wants Berlin to once again review and give it consideration for publication of his work. When he takes the work to Berlin’s office, an argument ensues and Scott storms out forgetting his music. When he returns minutes later to retrieve his composition, he finds not only is his music and Berlin gone, but a young man in Berlin’s outer office dead, his throat cut. Afraid Joplin will be accused of the murder, he is forced by his friends into hiding. Joplin’s friends and former associates come to Tin Pan Alley to help untangle the web of mystery: the disappearance of Scott’s composition, Berlin’s denial that Joplin gave him the music, and the death of an innocent boy.

In The King of Ragtime, the author writes, “There are people who don’t read fiction because ‘that’s just made up stuff. It’s not for real. It never happened. It’s not true.’ But truth has a broader compass than reality. A truth may come into clearer focus when viewed through a fictional lens.” In this fictional account featuring real people, where do fiction and reality come together and where do they go their separate ways? Scott Joplin, a well-known black musician, wants very badly to write what he thinks white people will accept. He's highly regarded for his jazz, but he wants to write a musical for the stage, or possibly an opera that will be heard by a wider audience than he enjoys in local bars and jazz hangouts. But towards the end of his life, his illness affects how he acts and what he says. He doesn't realize he may not be able to compose his music, and write his lyrics, as well as he could or should. The King of Ragtime is an impressive account of the composer's final months, the murder mystery made all the more real by the recognizable names associated with it.

The Jersusalem Post Interviews Mystery Author Matt Beynon Rees

Ruthie Blum Leibowitz of The Jerusalem Post conducted an interview with mystery author earlier this week. Rees' third Omar Yussef novel, The Samaritan's Secret, is scheduled for publication next month by Soho Press.

Rees, a former Time Magazine bureau chief based in Jerusalem, sets his mysteries in Palestine, a troubled spot in the world if ever there was one. With his novels, he sets out to explore and expose real-life situations in the Middle East through the format of a literary detective series.

Though much of the interview covers the current situation in Gaza, Rees does offer some insight into his writing. He says, "One of things I do in my novels is focus on those individuals who are prepared to stand up and take risks -- albeit small by our standards, but enormous by theirs. It's not that at the end, some grandiose peace is achieved. The scale is much smaller -- more like episodes in the larger scheme of things, which get resolved."

We reviewed Rees' second Omar Yussef mystery last year, A Grave in Gaza, noting that it was, in our opinion, one of the .

Mystery Bestsellers for January 09, 2009

Mystery Bestsellers

A list of the top 15 for the week ending January 09, 2009 has been posted on the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books website.

While it isn't surprising that 's latest Alex Cross thriller, , and Scarpetta by retain the top two positions this week (though to be fair, the difference in their scores is statistically insignificant), it is surprising that a book published last May is not only still on the list but has moved into fifth position. This wonder book: From Dead to Worse, the 8th Southern Vampire mystery with Sookie Stackhouse by .

Plum Spooky by Janet Evanovich

Also unsurprising is the debut of 's third between-the-numbers Stephanie Plum mystery, Plum Spooky, on the list this week. Or maybe it's the fourth. We're not sure if the Christmas Plum mystery counts as a "between-the-numbers" entry or not. And to confuse things further, the publisher is calling Plum Spooky the first full length between-the-numbers mystery! Regardless, there's no number in the title. Turn on all the lights and check under your bed. Things are about to get spooky in Trenton, . According to legend, the Jersey Devil prowls the Pine Barrens and soars above the treetops in the dark of night. As eerie as this might seem, there are things in the Barrens that are even more frightening and dangerous. And there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys. Wulf Grimoire is a world wanderer and an opportunist who can kill without remorse and disappear like smoke. He’s chosen Martin Munch, boy genius, as his new business partner, and he’s chosen the Barrens as his new playground. Munch received his doctorate degree in quantum physics when he was twenty-two. He’s now twenty-four, and while his brain is large, his body hasn’t made it out of the boys’ department at Macy’s. Anyone who says good things come in small packages hasn’t met Munch. Wulf Grimoire is looking for world domination. Martin Munch would be happy if he could just get a woman naked and tied to a tree. Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has Munch on her most-wanted list for failure to appear in court. Plum is the all-American girl stuck in an uncomfortable job, succeeding on luck and tenacity. Usually she gets her man. This time she gets a monkey. She also gets a big guy named Diesel. Diesel pops in and out of Plum’s life like birthday cake -- delicious to look at and taste, not especially healthy as a steady diet, gone by the end of the week if not sooner. He’s an über bounty hunter with special skills when it comes to tracking men and pleasing women. He’s after Grimoire, and now he’s also after Munch. And if truth were told, he wouldn’t mind setting Stephanie Plum in his crosshairs. Diesel and Plum hunt down Munch and Grimoire, following them into the Barrens, surviving cranberry bogs, the Jersey Devil, a hair-raising experience, sand in their underwear, and, of course ... monkeys.

Dead or Alive by Michael McGarrity

Coming in at number 13 this week is Dead or Alive, the 12th mystery in the Kevin Kerney series by . Living in London while his wife serves as a military attaché at the American Embassy, recently retired Santa Fe Police Chief Kevin Kerney gets an early morning phone call that changes everything and sends him hurrying home to his New Mexico ranch. Riley Burke, his partner in a horsetraining enterprise, has been mowed down on Kerney's doorstep by an escaped prisoner cutting a murderous swath through New Mexico. As the killings mount, Kerney teams up with his half-Apache son, Lieutenant Clayton Istee of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, to hunt for a psychotic murderer with a growing appetite for blood, who has no intention to be taken alive. Publishers Weekly say that Dead or Alive "displays the author's usual fine sense of place" and that "series fans will relish the deepening relationship of Kerney and Istee, who only recently learned they were father and son."

Bone by Bone by Carol O'Connell

Finally, new this week is Bone by Bone, a stand-alone thriller by the author of the Kathleen Mallory mysteries, . In the northern California town of Coventry, two teenage brothers go into the woods one day, but only one comes back. No one knows what happened to the younger brother, Josh, until twenty years later, when the older brother, Oren, now an ex-investigator for the Army CID, returns to Coventry for the first time in many years. His first morning back, he hears a thump on the front porch. Lying in front of the door is a human jawbone, the teeth still intact. And it is not the first such object, his father tells him. Other remains have been left there as well. Josh is coming home ... bone by bone. Using all his investigative skills, Oren sets out to solve the mystery of his brother's murder, but Coventry is a town full of secrets and secret-keepers: the housekeeper with the fugitive past, the deputy with the old grudge, the reclusive ex-cop from L.A., the woman with the title of town monster, and, not least of all, Oren himself. But the greatest secret of all belonged to his brother, and it is only by unraveling itthat Oren can begin to discover the truth that has haunted them all for twenty years. Mystery Book Review: Our Lady of Pain by Elena Forbes

Review: Our Lady of Pain is British author Elena Forbes second novel in the London detective Mark Tartaglia mystery series. While it’s a good read and with lots to recommend it, it doesn’t have the same degree of tension and excitement as Forbes blockbuster debut Die With Me that introduced Tartaglia and his team and “the Bridegroom”, a far more frightening and cold-blooded killer than the perpetrators Tartaglia tries to link to the two murders in Our Lady of Pain.

After getting to know Detective Tartaglia, his family and friends in Forbes first novel, it’s a pleasure to meet them again in this one. There are enough allusions to the earlier novel to refresh spine-tingling memories of the case or to make new readers want to read it. And there’s a consistency to the characters and their motivations that consolidates their credibility and their actions as this time they search for the murderer -- or is it murderers? -- of two mid-thirties women, strangled, stripped and their bodies grotesquely displayed with signs of S and M and references to a poem dedicated to “Our Lady of Pain.” Tartaglia is still dodging his sister’s invitations to have him meet the potential girl friends she has chosen for him. Sam Donovan, his gal Friday, is still repressing her feelings for her boss and again manages to get herself embroiled with a romantic partner who is nothing but trouble. And the neighbourhood cat continues to wander in and out of Tartaglia’s flat as the mood suits him. And like the cat, Detective “Slick Nick” Minderedes continues his tomcatting ways in chasing women, much to Donovan’s dismay, even her anger.

The suspects are credible villains as well, even as they hide their motivations and lie about their whereabouts forcing Tartaglia and his crew to ferret out the truth and expose their lies and false alibis. The first murder victim with her bedroom trunk full of S and M gear is no angel herself, and her half brother and her best friend are adept at scattering clouds of fairy dust for Tartaglia, Donovan and their colleagues to dispel as best they can with every modern resource available. And while they do their jobs and try to determine if a second murder is by a serial rapist or a copycat, Forbes tells the story from the viewpoints of various characters, and presents an intriguing study of how police team work and procedures combine to track clues, trace suspects, sift salt from sand and find the guilty parties -- even the most unlikely of them. And she’s one of the best at integrating the routines of police work with the emotional relationships of her characters, leaving readers wanting to know as much about their private lives as their actions in solving mysteries as large as murder and as small as the identity of the initials, “JB.”

Forbes' third novel, Evil in Return, is in the works.

Synopsis (from the publisher): On a snowy February morning, London art dealer Rachel Tenison goes for a jog through a dark and deserted Holland Park. Still giddy from the previous evening, her legs wobbly from too much drink and too little sleep, she trips and falls at the bottom of an icy hill. Lying on her back, enjoying the sensation of snowflakes melting on her skin, she savors the unexpected stillness of the moment. But then there’s a sharp crack of a tree branch close behind her, followed by a voice, softly calling her name.

Two days later, when Rachel’s naked, frozen body is discovered in the park, bound and arranged in a strangely symbolic manner, Detectives Mark Tartaglia and Sam Donovan are assigned the case. Still haunted by the Bridegroom, a chillingly seductive serial killer with a penchant for lonely girls and deadly heights, Tartaglia and Donovan are forced to put the past behind them as they try to uncover the identity of Rachel’s murderer. As they begin their investigation, however, they find that as much mystery surrounds Rachel’s life as it does her death. And when a tip from a journalist draws their attention to similarities between this murder and an unsolved crime committed the year before, the web becomes more tangled than ever ...

David Suchet Expresses His Desire to Continue as Agatha Christie's Poirot

In an article posted by The Press Association, David Suchet, probably best known for his portrayal of Agatha Christie's character Hercule Poirot but also an accomplished and versatile stage and screen actor, was given the freedom of the City of London, an honor that dates back to the 13th century.

Following the ceremony, he stated that he is desperate to see the completion of filming all of Christie's Poirot novels and short stories. "We are filming four episodes this year, which will leave six more to do and that will be the complete works. He doesn't exist after that," Suchet said. "I feel two emotions, great sadness to leave him, and 700 million people watch it throughout the world, but also terrific joy if I am given the opportunity to do the complete works. It really depends if the money is there because they might not have the funding."

Various collections of the Poirot mysteries are available on DVD from .

Review written by Lauren, Age 12, Grade 6. Date of review: January 2009.

Review: The Case of the Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer is the first book in the Enola Holmes mystery series. The main character is Enola Holmes, a 14 year old girl, who has two brothers. One of them is the great detective Sherlock Holmes.

When Enola Holmes discovers her mother’s strange disappearance she quickly sets out to find her. Her mother has sometimes gone a few days without being home, but comes back, but when Enola’s mother goes missing on her birthday setting out wearing the oddest clothes, she knows something isn’t right. She escapes being sent off to boarding school and immediately begins to search for her mother. She disguises herself as a widow and travels to the city of London. While on the journey Enola comes upon the case of the missing Marquess, Lord Tewksbury. She and the run away Lord Tewksbury, the heir to a throne, are kidnapped by two men. They manage to quickly flee their captors. Enola then leaves Lord Tewksbury to hunt for her long lost mother which nobody seems to care about except for her.

This is a book with a lot of action packed scenes. Although it can sometimes be confusing with its strong vocabulary,
